Un-beelievable: Emily Lawrence, 7, and Mikayla Inglis, 7 came to school in matching bee outfits.

Eyes on you: Liam O'Toole, 7, dressed up as a spider for the Butterfly Ball.

Let's bee friends: Sienna Hobby, 7, has been learning about bees.

Pretty butterflies: Aleesha Sullivan, 6, and Sienna Nobles, 6.

Colourful: Odin Minotti-Watson, 6, with a green caterpillar painted on his face.

Bourchier Primary School’s Year 1 students are entomologists in the making after spending weeks learning about insects.

The students’ research was celebrated at the Butterfly Ball and ‘‘bug themed’’ afternoon tea with parents on Thursday.

Some of the delicious creations were butterfly-shaped biscuits, rolly polly snails and a cake decorated as a ladybug.

Creative themed costumes were also on show.

The students have been encouraged to study all types of insects and could be found looking for insects on school grounds and in their backyards, creating habitats for them before releasing them.

‘‘We’ve encouraged parents to be involved with the learning project,’’ teacher Helen Ryan said.
