Kindergarten students at Wyndham Early Learning Centre in Shepparton learned the rules of responsible pet ownership with GV Vets co-owner Frances Jenner this week.
Armed with her large dog Duke, Ms Jenner showed the children how to check over their dog for any signs of injury or lumps and bumps.
She then showed students how to check their pet’s teeth and the children were even given the chance to listen to Duke’s heartbeat.
Teacher Karen Cartwright said the visit was held to coincide with Love Your Pet Day.
‘‘They’re learning how to take care of their pets, what vets do and also life skills,’’ she said.
Ms Jenner went on to show the children how to lead their pet and what they needed to have in terms of a collar and identification.
Ms Cartwright said they held the session for the first time with Ms Jenner’s children last year who were in kindergarten but it was such a success she returned this year.
‘‘She’s also the centre’s vet so she looks after all our chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs,’’ Ms Cartwright said.
The children were joined by Duke sitting on their mat, which caused much laughter among the students.
