Countdown to China on for Verney Road School students

By Madeleine Caccianiga

Verney Road School students are getting excited about an upcoming trip to China, making it the school’s fourth trip overseas since 2010.

Although the China experience trip is not until September, the school has started to make plans to fundraise for the trip.

School senior years unit leader Janine Thorne said 10 students were selected to go on the trip in the company of eight staff members.

‘‘We do it every three years so that every student in the school gets the opportunity to be invited. This year we had 24 students who put their hand up, so then we had a ballot and 10 lucky students got their names pulled out of a hat,’’ Ms Thorne said.

She said going to China gave the students the same opportunity as their peers.

‘‘Lots of young people these days will do a trip overseas ... our students don’t really get that opportunity because financially it’s too difficult, but also to travel independently overseas is difficult for families to be able to support that,’’ Ms Thorne said.

The school is organising a Chinese Garden Party fundraiser to contribute to the costs of the trip.

‘‘For $25 a head it will be in a Shepparton private garden and the students will be there as waiters to help cater for the costs of the trip,’’ Ms Thorne said.

She said before the trip the students would learn the language and traditions of China.

‘‘What it all means — the flag and how important it is to them, what we’re going to see, what we’re going to do,’’ Ms Thorne said.
