Shepparton’s Fatima Albendar has already put her Lift Off Scholarship to good use, completing a Bachelor of Science at La Trobe University.
Ms Albendar was one of several students awarded this year’s Community Fund Goulburn Valley Educational Lift Off Scholarships and recently met donors SofCorp Wealth.
‘‘It has been an honour,’’ she said of receiving the funding to put toward her tertiary studies.
She said it felt great to be equal with her fellow students and buy equipment when it was needed.
Ms Albendar moved to Greater Shepparton in 2014 and she spoke little English. She has since worked hard to complete her studies.
Scholarship donor Tracey Sofra said this was the fifth year SofCorp Wealth had donated funding for the scholarships — a result of the WOW Women event in Shepparton.
She said SofCorp Wealth’s Glenn Trickey went about funding the scholarships.
‘‘We continue to do it every year,’’ Ms Sofra said.
She said one of the first recipients of the scholarships had graduated from university.
A spokesperson from the Community Fund GV said Ms Sofra also offered support through mentorship of scholarship recipients.
Mr Trickey said it had been great hearing the stories of the recipients over the years, including Ms Albendar’s journey.
‘‘If they’re willing to do the hard work, we can help them out,’’ he said.
‘‘We don’t want anyone to be held back because of their financial situation.’’
