Cars up in flames

By Shepparton News

There were three more incidents of cars set alight in Mooroopna and Kialla at the weekend - adding to the tally of more than 60 cars abandoned in the Shepparton district so far this year.

Senior Constable Sarah Trewin said a car was reported dumped and burnt at Little Rd in Mooroopna at about 4pm on Friday.

This was followed by a car reported stolen from a Tatura address at 4am on Saturday which was found half an hour later abandoned and burnt-out on Echuca Rd, Mooroopna.

Yesterday, between 3.30am and 4am a car was set alight at Bellfield Crt, Kialla.

Reports of a second car burnt at the scene could not be confirmed.

Sen Const Trewin said police are investigating all three incidents, but do not believe they are linked.

The incidents come on the back of two suspicious car fires - one at Windlass Ave Mooroopna earlier this month, and the other in Appletree Cres, Shepparton three weeks ago.

This year alone, Parks Victoria has been notified of more than 60 abandoned cars in the Shepparton Regional Park and Lower Goulburn National Park.

Sen Const Trewin warned residents to lock cars and homes and keep car keys in a safe location.

‘‘In some cases, people are gaining entry to houses and stealing car keys,’’ she said.

She asked that people alert police immediately if a car is stolen and to report any cars set alight in bushland.

She said police are appealing for witnesses to any suspicious behaviour relating to the abandoned cars in Echuca and Kialla.

Anyone with information is urged to phone Shepparton police on 58205777, Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or submit a confidential report online at
